Autumn Appling: Hanging on to the Season

By in Adventures, Tasty Treats

Tuesdays are my least favourite days. Folks I know bitch about Mondays til they turn blue, but for me it’s Tuesday that’s the troublemaker. On Mondays, you’re still coasting in happyland from the fun or relaxation you had over the weekend. By Tuesday, none of that is left—you just see a long, daunting week stretching ahead of you. Wednesdays are awesome: you’ve made it through half the week, so you feel like a champ. Plus, we go dancing on Wednesdays. Thursdays are great: only one day left in your week, so you start to relax a little. Fridays? I don’t think I even need to go there. But those Tuesdays… they’ll getcha.

So, yep, today is one of those days that always feels like a challenge. It’s a multi-cup-of-coffee day. It’s an I-forgot-my-phone day and an I-tripped-and-bruised-myself day (yeah, yeah… first world problems). Today happens to be pretty chilly as well. I am having to accept that Christmas is around the corner—we trimmed a tree last week, and are working on our gift list now. But that doesn’t mean I am quite ready to let go of fall. In fact, since fall barely happens in San Diego, I am hanging onto it a little desperately. Especially on a Tuesday. So, how about a little seasonal brightness to remind you of warmth and sweetness and a season of throwing leaves, hmm?

From our trek to Julian, a little apple-picking bonanza for you, today. Man, I could go for some pie.

ohmygoodness these pictures are absolutely beautiful

  2. I know what you mean by Tuesday being the dreaded day of the week. And, hey, if it makes you feel a bit more snuggly — it’s usually even colder up here in Escondido than it is in S.D. proper.

Fabulous photos as usual. I especially like the one with the apples in a line against weeds (010-4, at left).

Makes me think of our trip to Julian on October 10th — and I still can’t stop dreaming about Mom’s Apple Boysenberry pie. Have you had it? A local recommended it to us, and it was spec.tac.ular. You must try it if you haven’t already!!

These photos are lurvely and I so want to bite into an apple right now.

Tuesday will be over soon and then you can get back with the happier week.

But hey missy, don’t you complain about the weather in San Diego or I will come there by myself and take you back to Montreal ;-) .

I knew you’d come here and serve me with a little slap for that one, Mom. ;) it’s been hovering just above 0° Celcius, though, lately at night here, Mum… so, I am sure you can appreciate that being cold for SD!

Ok,hold up. Uhm, Is that a CAMEL? Hahahahahha. Please tell me how that ended up in the “apple picking” story. Great pics as usual’s babe.

  5. caroline says:

ah, i agree. monday’s are my planning day for the week and come tuesday it’s time to execute.

  6. angela says:

jas, as a lifelong san diego resident, i want to thank you for enlightening me on this camel farm. i want to go!

You definitely have a point about Tuesday.. all the relaxation and fun just drains completely out of me.. but usually it starts as soon as I get out of work lol.. or halfway through work rather. I just love your photos as well… amazing

  8. susan yee says:

i can’t believe i didn’t even NOTICE that it was a camel until someone COMMENTED on it. omg. what!

  9. Jacqueline says:

nothing says autumn like apple-picking! we went for the first time this year and it was fantastic.

also, you’ve totally sold me on tuesdays being the worst day of the week. although i have to say, sunday nights are depressing too — it’s the anticipation of starting work the next day that ruins those last few hours (for me, anyway).

    • Jas says:

SO True! I am always surprised when people plan parties on Sunday evenings for that very reason—it’s such a bummer knowing your weekend’s nearly over!
Jacqueline, I’m super duper surprised you’d never been before! I thought apple-picking was quite common in Northern California? I guess I grew up with it in Montreal, though, so I just expect it to be commonplace everywhere.

  10. Sigh. Loved Julian. It may sound strange but even though I can apple pick near me, I still miss Julian. It had a quaintness that few other places I’ve been to possess.

    • Jas says:

I love that you love it. Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of folks be down on Julian, saying it’s too touristy, or there’s just not enough out there to make it interesting. But I really do feel like no matter what, there’s an inherent magicness there.

  11. Kelsey says:

Oh my, I had SUCH a Tuesday today too. It really felt like I deserved for it to be a Friday, you know? But marching on to Wednesday…

  12. kathleen says:

you’re making me hungry! now I need to get some apples.

not that they’ll be even half as good as those look!
